About Solaris

In January of 2000, 50 saplings of‘Solaris’, which is a kind of grapes, were sent from Freiburg city in Germany to Matsuyama city as a symbol of the friendship of sister city agreement.
They have been grown cautiously at Freiburg Friendship Vineyard which is located in Rainbow Highland since then.

What is "Solaris"?

Our sister city, Freiburg is located in the southwest region of Germany and produces high quality of Baden wine. Also, there is the State Winery Institute in Freiburg city and various studies such as breeding are being conducted there. "Solaris" is a kind of bred grape for wine in this institute, and it can produce rich and mellow wine with high sugar content.

"Solaris" ("the sun" in Latin) comes from the nickname of Freiburg which is said to be the city with the longest daylight hours in Germany and also comes from solar energy that Freiburg has tackled as an important policy.

"Solaris" came to Matsuyama”

50 saplings of Solaris were sent to Matsuyama from Freiburg in January of 2000, however, they couldn't come to Matsuyama on arrival, because plants from abroad must be strictly examined to enter Japan. So, these saplings were inspected and observed for about 10 months at the Plant Quarantine in Kobe.
They finally came to Matsuyama in December of 2000 and were planted at Freiburg Friendship Vineyard in Rainbow Highland.

Solaris has grown in the greenhouse in order to avoid much rain in rainy season. Unlike Germany, we have frequent rain for a long time during that season in Japan, which makes it difficult to grow outside.

Utilizing Solaris

When we were made the presents of saplings, a city staff in Freiburg said that Solaris would have born the fruits in three years. And as they said, we have harvested a lot of grapes since then.

Harvested Solaris have been used to make juice or wine, etc., since 2004.
Besides, they are sometimes made use of for international events and international exchange classes at schools.

We have produced candy from Solaris juice since 2009 other than juice.
We also have held a "Grape Picking Exchange Event" which is the event for international residents and Japanese citizens to pick grapes together.

※Currently, we only produce Solaris candy.
